John Stezaker is a really cool collage artist I saw a couple of years ago in the Whitechapel gallery. I really like the use of colours because they aren’t harsh but are very strong. The idea of using portraits and landscapes to create one image makes a good message.

another idea

I created these collages by photocopying water bottles images over and over again to show the usage of water bottles. I wanted to look at the rate of the wastage. I think these images could a campaign especially around uni where they are used probably to much and people need to become more aware of it.

Another that I got from this idea. To collect the bottles from the students at uni maybe set up bins all around. Then with these bottles create something I’m not sure what but something that can show the direct people that are wasting these bottles actually how much they are using.

i know that this idea is for wasting water in bottled form and not personal water usage like my group was discussing but i thought it was worth sharing.

schedule for the next couple of weeks

The next couple of weeks are going to be important and busy so we need to schedule our next steps

For Wednesday 23rd

Research and start creating proposals, ideas and prototypes

By 6pm blog so we can share between the group

Thursday 24th

Our ideas should be shared and into our group and then we can discuss them in our meeting.

Then look at our original terms of agreement and see if we are meeting this

Monday 28th

By this point we would have researched external partners that are relative to our brief, that we could get advise from or collaborate with

Thursday 31st

At this point we are going to test our idea, then review our findings so we are ready for the next thursdays meeting

Monday 4th

Review of the projects development,

present a draft of our presentation to the other groups

Thursday 7th

Project Pitch Presentations

At this point we should be prepared and clearly understand our idea, also have a presentation that is interesting and gets people excited to see our final outcome

sum up of research

Over the last two week personally and my group have found out some really interesting points and questions that i wouldn’t have thought about before.

i thought the actual water expanding because heat cause by pollution not just the ice melting was surprising. I also found shocking imagery that really shows the damage done to the water and animals. I think people don’t really know about the damage being done because its not being seen.

The talk on wednesday was the must interesting. But most of all the shocking plastic in the ocean and out of all the facts i have found some this is what i found to more in-depth with. The amount of plastic is amazing but also the plastic that isn’t in its whole form anymore so people aren’t aware of whats in the water. Or the horrible imagery that i saw of the effects on the wildlife.

The fisherman story was emotional as well and something i know a lot of people aren’t aware of but i think maybe the plastic in the ocean maybe is more important.

Consumption Talk

Consumption Talk

This talk didn’t really have much to do with the topic of water, but it did have some really interesting points about generally waste and consumption. Also points about how we should go about designing this project.

In the last 30 years we have consumed nearly all of the earths resources.
It is important now that we are think the rate we are consuming these resources.
When we are designing we should start to think about how we are behaving with the design. For example of use of the materials and the waste we create. Then we have to think about what we are showing the viewers and the way we would what other people to behave when it comes to the environment.
There are really high statistics that show most people in the western world don’t wear most of the clothes that they are buying.
If people knew about the process in that their clothes were made and about the materials they use, they probably wouldn’t find it so easy to throw them away.
We should focus on something that shows design and also what we think about the subject.
Create something that is both artistic and commercial and also communicates the message.
Something that comments on today’s society.
Use art to connect with people.
The next generation of people in the industry need to be re-educated to focus on the problems of waste and consumption.
In the western world most of the food especially going into supermarkets gets thrown away. For example 50/60% of fish is thrown away at some point.

Biodiversity Talk

Biodiversity Talk

The first speaker in the talk was an artist Silas Birtwistle, who obviously had a very different way of seeing a project from designers like us.
His project was created a table that was made out of drift wood. He explained that the project was just a nice idea and later he put it into context with environmental reasons.
He talked about making the connections between the sea and land using the drift wood. But also made connections with people, especially the people from around the world that collect the wood from their beaches. Also the money that is raised from the selling of the table is going to go back to these communities, so there is some charity involved.
He talked about all the materials that he used were collected from the ocean but he also looked at what the communities used as materials.

What I got from these talk was that we have look at materials maybe from the sea, but especially organic materials to create our outcome that represents the ocean. Also the way he talked about his process of having the idea then finding a really strong context was interesting.

The next part of the talk was by a sailor Jo Royle, who now looks into the damage that plastic is doing to the ocean. Her talk was so interesting and had so being shocking facts. One point she said was people on small islands that only use very organic materials and aren’t really damaging the environmental are still dealing with the effects of the plastic problems, as it is washing up on their beaches.
Another shocking point, she talked about Gyres that are points in the ocean where the wind goes round in giant cycles. But this is where the plastic is being collected and created plastic islands that float on the ocean. To think that there is such a massive build up of plastic in the ocean is shocking that it can form something that people would call island.
Another important point was the discussion she had about the amount of plastic that is wasted. For example toothbrushes are even in the ocean. They can be made up of 5 plastics and 250 different chemicals, but these can’t be used again. So that plastic will just be waste in the world for hundreds of years. Also the plastic in ear bubs that is used for a couple of seconds will then be in the world for around two hundred years.
The effect of plastic in the ocean is effecting the wildlife as much fish and mammals just eat what they can. People think the plastic that’s in the ocean goes away but it just thins out and becomes smaller so it’s easier for the fish to eat. Also if they are eating it, we are eating it.
Also from the fish eating plastic it is hurting them in other ways, scientists have found that male swordfish are having female swordfish eggs because of the plastic.
The last point from these talk is that people need to think about what plastics are being used for different items and is it the right kind of plastic.

The last talk was a film maker Jack Price for produced a film for green peace called The Last Fishman. Showing the importance of local fisherman still being allowed to fish and keeping it local. They are much more sustainable than when a big brand fishing for example as they know that part of the sea as normally their family has always looked after it.

I just wanted to share these images from the national geographic website because I think they are so powerful without any words and maybe these is the sort of impact we want to look at producing with our work.

These is a really cool info graphic piece from the same website. Its called Saudi Arabia’s Great Thirst and it shows the rate they have been losing their water.
