Decisions made today

Here is a record of the decisions and developments from this afternoon. I have attached all of the relevant files that everyone will require access to.

Firstly, we made the decision to add the original (drip2) sound file to the follow-up emails, but Rianna needs to give us this file, so that we all have access to it. Please either post this on the blog or in the facebook group.

The instructions have been written so I will create a digital file and get all that printed for tomorrow.

Here are the two files for the email template and all of the potential ‘thank you promises’ that need to be inserted.

Also, for when it comes to sending the emails out, I have set up the email address. Here are the details:

  • email address: everydropcounts2013@live.com
  • password: Everydrop13

Printing pledge cards – successes and failures

Today we printed out all of the pledge cards and began to construct them. However, this did not go nearly as smoothly as we had hoped. Firstly, we printed all of the cards on our desired paper using the LCC xerox. As we had made slight changes to colouring and sizing since the last test print, the text and the lines came out far too light. It was too difficult to read the cards with ease so we realised we needed to amend the files.

However, the tessellated pages for printing were only saved as a pdf and therefore we could not edit them. We were therefore reduced to editing each single file, and then re-creating the master document, ensuring we had the correct number of each card, as calculated by Rianna recently.

Ultimately, we completed all of the printing successfully, so I would say that we certainly learned that it has paid off having been so organised and getting everything sorted well in advance of the 6th, when our installation goes live! Had we not finished everything today, we still would have had time to sort it all out!

We tested out the perforation wheel to make sure we could adequately create a tearable strip along the bottom of the card – this was a success! Once we had a completed pledge card we tested out different sizes of the white paper inserts so see what would fit most snugly. We then calculated how we could be most economical with our paper usage, and got these inserts trimmed down in Print Finishing.

Calculating the pledge card requirements

Based on the feedback we received from LCC students during our research stages, we have catered the specific numbers of each pledge in accordance with their popularity. The pledges about which many people said “yeah, I’d do that”, we have many more of, and those with mixed reviews are fewer in number. But prior to these calculations we had also edited down the number of pledges, taking out those that received poor feedback.

Rianna’s calculations:

Drinking water

  • I promise to…reuse one drinking glass throughout the day/refill my water bottle, to save on washing up – 11
  • I promise to…keep water in a jug in the fridge, so that I don’t have to run the tap for a long time for a cold drink – 25

Laundry

  • I promise to…wait for a full load before starting the washing machine, otherwise, I promise to match the water level to the size of the load – 25
  • I promise to…wash dark clothes in cold water to save on water, and to help my clothes keep their colour – 11

Shower/bath

  • I promise to…take a 5-minute shower every day, instead of a bath in order to save two thirds of the water – 11

Running the tap

  • I promise to…turn off the tap whilst lathering my hands with soap – 25

Kitchen

  • I promise to…soak pots and pans instead of letting water run while I scrape them clean – 25
  • I promise to… put a lid on my saucepans – this makes water boil quicker, and the lack of evaporation requires less water initially. – 25
  • I promise to…fill my kettle only with enough water for my daily needs – 25
  • I promise to…wash my fruit and veg in a bowl, rather than under a running tap. This water can later be used to feed houseplants. – 20

Bathroom

  • I promise to…turn off the tap when I brush my teeth. This will save approximately 9 litres of water per minute. – 25
  • I promise to…avoid flushing away cotton balls, make-up wipes and pesky spiders, to avoid water wastage. I will use the bin instead. – 25
  • I promise to…use the half flush option when possible on a dual flush toilet – 14
  • I promise to…rinse my razor in a plugged sink, rather than letting the tap run – 13

11 + 25 + 25 +11 +11 + 25 + 25 + 25 + 25 + 20 + 25 + 25 +14 +13 =                              280 individual pledge cards

14 different pledge cards

8 pledges per sheet

35 sheets needed

Beginning to use Audacity

On the recommendation of Chris Petter we downloaded ‘Audacity’ to edit our sound clips and create all of the appropriate files that we intend to play. Screen shot 2013-02-21 at 17.20.46

We found it necessary to watch a number of youtube tutorials in order to understand how to do certain tasks, as the software is not very well set-out and is henceforth difficult to negotiate.

Nonetheless, despite a great amount of effort we were not really able to make any significant progress as we do not seem to be able to save our files at all. When saved as Audacity files we can never get the clips to open up again, and whenever we try to export the files we are told we are missing a carrier program, even though we have downloaded all the necessary additional software. This was extremely frustrating, especially when we have put in so much extra time and effort. We are going to meet with Richard/Chris early next week in order to receive some guidance and find out where we are going wrong.

Meeting with Richard

Hi guys, just want to be able to share the details of my meeting with Richard with you all so you’re clued into the plans for our sound system.

We discussed that it would be most appropriate to position an amp and two large speakers (along with a laptop) on the first floor ledge, above the atrium. The speakers will be positioned pointing downwards into the space and there should be a really great amount of reverberation and echoing, which will make our audio really strong. This idea of sound coming from above should also work nicely because it will almost seem like the sound is falling on you which should certainly heighten this sense of an immersive experience.

I have made an appointment with Richard for us to set everything up in the space on Tuesday 5th March at 11:00am, so we all need to be present for that please. He is also going to add a couple of small effects to our clips to maximise their impact, we need to meet up with him sometime next week in order to get this done.

Testing the sound

Today we tested out the sound within the space (the atrium), just to get a feel for the sort of atmosphere that our sound clips are creating. This preliminary testing was also important in terms of suggesting to us what sort of equipment we might need.

Having conducted this small scale test we discovered that the sound really fits in the location. It echoes really nicely and creates an immersive atmosphere. The only problem was that the speakers we were testing on simply weren’t loud enough. However, this shouldn’t be a problem as we intend to use a bigger and better quality sound system. We met with Chris Petter (Sound Arts) and he has recommended that we get in touch with Richard Coles, who will be able to give us a hand with finding the right equipment and setting it up adequately.

Mockup of the Atrium

Image

This is a quick mock up of what Colette and I imagined on friday while we were looking around the atrium. We are still going to look at where the fingerprints will go around the room because there are breaks and windows in the room. This means the fingerprints wouldn’t be in a complete circle so that might ruin the look of what we are trying to create. There is this blank white wall that you see as soon as you walk through the doors. Maybe we could have the fingerprints as lines to represent tide lines.

Summary of progress from today’s meeting

Lauren and I met today and managed to achieve quite a lot. We covered all of the areas that we agreed needed to be addressed on Monday. We’ve made lots of decisions too as we feel that at this point it is important to start pinning things down and getting an idea of how the final model will come together. I have posted my sketchbook pages that document our discussions but I will attempt to give a summarised overview.

The atrium:

photo-20 photo-21

The thumbprint wall design will feature on the main wall that you face when you enter the atrium from the design block. We considered having a design that spanned the entire circumference of the room as we liked the cyclical element but the walls are too broken up by multiple doorways and windows and we feel it would become unclear and ultimately be a weaker visual because it is unlikely that a chain of thumbprints would spread that far around such a big room. Instead the thumb/fingerprints will travel in a row(s) across this main wall and will give the illusion of a watermark(s). Our ‘aim’ is to get the thumbprints to span the length of this wall. We will break the length down into measurements in order to relate this to the technicalities of changing the nature of our sound piece in response to success.

photo-23photo-24

We will have large plinth(s) in the middle of the atrium with all of the pledge cards laid out on top. Alternatively we could potentially use something like the rack featured above, but we feel that the plinth would be much cleaner and more successful. This plinth will serve as a sort of ‘station’ for making pledges. Its central location will attract the attention of anyone passing through the area who will walk right past the plinth (though of course our sound clip should have already attracted attention).

The pledge cards:

After examining the designs that each of us posted on the blog for reference, Lauren and I decided that my designs were most in-fitting with the atmosphere we wanted to create. We also decided that we would further develop these as we had physical tactile samples to play around with and further develop. We went and bought an ink pad and started testing out printing onto different surfaces (see my sketchbook pages for the successes of this). We really think that the thumbprint idea is effective and have decided to firmly stick with it – and of course it is reinforced by the wall design.

Scan 1

Above is a sample of the testing that we did of fingerprints on the actual surfaces. It became obvious to us that printing was much more effective on cartridge paper so we have committed to this. We also felt that the grey paper had a really nice clean feel to it, and we thought that actually, avoiding blue made the entire piece more abstract and begs the audience to think about their water usage in a less obvious way and to consider the things we might not always ‘see’. We also want to try and squeeze our slogan (Every Drop Counts) onto the card somewhere for everyone’s reference.

See the bottom two sketchbook pages I posted for a consideration of how to further develop the pledge cards. We have committed to the bottom left design in the image above because of the way that this will allow us to attach a removable perforated tag which will house the participant’s specific pledge and their contact email. This addition needs to be added to the design and tested. We are also slightly increasing the size of the pledge card to accommodate different sizes of handwriting. We are also going to look at developing the typeface used, considering alternatives. Lauren and I are working on this over the weekend.

Recordings:

We played each other the recordings we made this week, but as we did not have access to everyone’s we were not really able to make too much progress here. However we have booked out a recording mic from monday to friday next week so we can begin to do more high quality recordings for the duration of next week. I am going to pick up the mic at 10:00am on Monday so we can potentially meet on Monday evening, if not, on Tuesday morning.

We have also sent an email to Chris Petter to attempt to arrange a meeting next week to try and gain any advice or guidance he might have for us.

THINGS THAT STILL NEED TO BE DONE/DISCUSSED:

  • Mine and Lauren’s development and refinement of the pledge cards
  • Everyone needs to bring as many domestic water recordings as possible for Monday
  • We need to consider the inclusion of an ‘Every Drop Counts’ banner in our Atrium location – Lauren and I feel it would be successful and less imposing if featured on the plinth we will hopefully be using…
  • We also need to develop a sort of layout for the cards atop the plinth
  • We also need to consider writing a very brief explanation of our piece that the audience can read as they participate
  • We need to consider a way to all share our sound clips so that they are accessible and so that they can be linked to the blog
  • Make recordings next week
